Funny Names #1 - SPITTLE

I once was asked by a friend to learn the origins of the SPITTLE family name. It was her maiden name, and it had been a source of some embarrassment. I learned that it was taken from the Irish pronunciation of "hospital" (O'spittle) and that her ancestors had belonged to a group of highly revered physicians, a rare profession in the late Middle Ages.
